The 1981 BMW M1 is a mid-engine sports car released by German automaker BMW in collaboration with Lamborghini. The M1 was the first M-badged car and was designed to be a racing car for the Group 4 and Group 5 categories in the FIA World Championship. The car featured a 3.5-liter straight-six engine that produced 277 horsepower and could reach a top speed of 163 miles per hour. It had a distinctive wedge-shaped body with a low-slung profile, and pop-up headlights. The interior boasted leather seats, an eight-speaker sound system, and air conditioning. Only 453 BMW M1s were built, making it a rare and coveted collector's item.
